Qualifying Exam Dates

If you intend to take the Materials Science and Engineering doctoral qualifier exam in November 2014, please let Pamela Ross know before September 2, 2014. The closed book exam will be held Wednesday, November 12 from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the open book exam will be Thursday, November 13 from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The Spring 2015 Materials Science and Engineering doctoral qualifying examination will be held May 11 and 12. If you intend to take the Materials Science and Engineering doctoral qualifier exam in May 2015, please let Pamela Ross know before March 2, 2015. The closed book exam will be from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on the 11th and the open book exam will be from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on the 12th. Both a nanomaterials-based version and a physical metallurgy-based version of the exam will be available (see below for details of exam subject matter).

Nanomaterials-based Exam:

  • Undergraduate materials science (as per EGN 3365)
  • Intermediate Structure and Properties (as per EMA 5104, new version)
  • Thermodynamics (as per EMA 5106)
  • Kinetics (as per EMA 5317)
  • Interfaces and Colloids (as per EMA 6319)

Physical metallurgy-based exam:

  • Undergraduate materials science (as per EGN 3365)
  • Intermediate Structure and Properties (as per EMA 5104, new version)
  • Thermodynamics (as per EMA 5106)
  • Kinetics (as per EMA 5317)
  • Physical Metallurgy (as per EMA 6126)
