Principle Investigator

Paria Gharavi is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Central Florida, which she joined in August 2023. She received her master’s and doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2014, and the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, in 2019, respectively. She joined Professor Stach’s group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania to pursue her postdoctoral research interests in materials characterizations using electron microscopy. She is a materials scientist and electron microscopist, with a strong background in materials engineering, working on the development and applications of advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques to address a wide range of complex materials challenges. She applies her skills to develop state-of-the-art TEM techniques, shedding light on materials such as ferroelectrics, energy materials, III-V materials, semiconductors, and 2D functional materials.
Her research group is focused on the fascinating world of multifunctional materials, exploring their growth, synthesis, and atomic-scale structural characterization. Driven by her passion to understand the intricate structure-property relationships in materials, she investigates various applications, from memory devices to microelectromechanical systems. Gharavi’s collaborations with leading electron microscopy centers across the globe – USA, Australia, China, and Germany — have enriched her expertise, and her outstanding work has earned her several prestigious awards, including first place in the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure microscopy image contest. Blending her experiences and passion for discovery, Gharavi continues to unravel the secrets of advanced novel materials through the lens of electron microscopy.
