A Brief History of Materials Science and Engineering Program at UCF

Prof Vimal Desai Professor of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) started the Advanced Materials Processing and Analysis Center (AMPAC), a Type II UCF Center in 1998. The mission of the center is focused on Interdisciplinary Materials Research and Education. In 1999, 2000, MS and Ph.D. program in Materials Science and Engineering was established in MMAE. In 2012, a stand-alone Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSE) was established in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), 6th Department in CECS. Prof. Kevin Coffey of MSE was appointed as the Interim Chair of the MSE Department. In 2014, Prof. Sudipta Seal, Director of AMPAC and Nanoscience Technology Center was appointed as Interim Chair of MSE. In 2017, Dr. Seal was selected as Chair of the MSE Department. In 2019, Prof Jiyu Fang of MSE was selected as Director of AMPAC. In 2020, an Undergraduate MSE program was established and approved by UCF and the State of Florida, 2nd only Department in the State to have the MSE UG program. MSE Department has 21 tenure and tenure earning faculty, more than 25 Secondary joint appointment faculty, 2 Senior, lecturer, and instructor. Both AMPAC and MSE have 7 Administrative Staff and 2 Engineers.
