Research

The Banerjee Lab aims to uncover the fundamental mechanisms that govern how materials are deposited and removed at the scale of a single atomic layer (~0.1 × 10⁻⁹ meters). By mastering these processes, we seek to engineer materials from the bottom up; literally one atomic layer at a time. This level of atomic-scale control over composition and structure enables unprecedented precision in tuning material properties, and ultimately, in shaping their technological applications.

With more than 100 publications, 12 issued U.S. patents, and a growing community of alumni thriving in both industry and academia, the Banerjee Lab continues to push the boundaries of thin films science and engineering.

While our funded projects evolve, our core research philosophy remains unchanged: to advance the fundamental process science of thin films and to develop novel compositions and nanostructures with precisely engineered properties. The Banerjee Lab is part of the NSF-funded Center for Quantum Materials Innovation and Education Excellence. We invite you to learn about this center and its amazing members as well!

We thank all our funding agencies who have supported our work!
